Adopting the precedent of the distinctive stone barns associated with the large farm estates of this part of Ireland, this new farmhouse for a young family will sit as a strong vernacular form emerging from the existing parkland mature oaks of its estate setting. A gable entrance is signified through the trees by a recessed vaulted porch. Low stone walls extend from the building to retain courtyard and terrace. These walls double as seats while helping to visually embed the building to the sloping ground.
Intimate sleeping and study spaces are held within and under a timber enclosure placed into the overall masonary volume. The remaining space forms a large open living and dining room, from which the eye is lead out along the external walls back into the surrouding oak trees and the Knockmealdown and Galtee Mountains beyond.
